Chapter 24
Fei and Sen stared at the scout in shock. For his part, the scout held his salute. Nathan felt that the manâs gaze looked rather distant, however.
Seeing an invading army in your nation was far from comforting.
âAre any of the enemy heading our way?â Nathan asked.
âNo, sir,â the scout answered. He hesitated. âThey seemed focused on the tower. But they had definitely lain siege to it. Both of us saw fire and other sorcery flung from the top of the tower, and a dome barrier was active over the exterior wall.â
âKeep an eye on the pass,â Nathan ordered. âAlternate with other scouts on a regular basis. Let me know the moment you see Federation soldiers marching toward us.â
âSir!â the scout barked. He dropped his salute and ran back into the keep.
Nathan sighed. The two women looked at him.
âYou expected this?â Sen asked.
âI expected something,â Nathan said. âA demonic invasion is detectable through the leylines, as is the buildup of energy. Weâre fighting an enemy Bastion, and he would likely move the moment he felt the portal was close to activating. Thatâs why I wanted Vera to establish a gateway with Leopold. The old man will move against an invading army if he has a clear path, and if he doesnât need to send his Champions riding the long way across the countryside.â
âShouldnât he be moving against them regardless?â Sen said, expression darkening.
âThatâs what weâre here for. Plus, heâs holding Forselle Valley. I canât complain too much. Itâs not as though the Federation can oust him in the north.â Nathan shrugged. âAlthough they may be stupid enough to try.â
Speaking of stupid, Nathan turned back to the demonic horde gathered below.
The clearing swelled with the demonic mass, and the portal showed no signs of weakening. Nathan frowned and tapped into the binding stone. A quick search found what he was looking for.
âThis must be the last of them,â Nathan said. âThe demonic energy is running low.â
âSo theyâre going to charge us en masse?â Sen asked.
Nathan nodded. âTheyâre only weaker demons, but with their numbers they might be able to overwhelm us. At least, thatâs what they think.â
âSo we crush them here and go help Vera?â Sen looked at Nathan in disbelief. âI donât have the stamina to do that, Nathan. Thereâs as many demons down there as weâve already killed. And you look like youâre about to collapse. Plus, you donât have the energy left in the binding stone to support us away from the keep.â
All excellent points.
If Nathan intended to do this the normal way, that is.
Nathan nodded. âYouâre right. Thatâs why weâre not going to do that.â
Sen stared at him. âWeâre leaving Vera?â
âNo.â
âThen what are we doing?â Sen asked, exasperated.
âTrust me, Sen.â Nathan ran a hand through his hair as he thought through his next steps. âFei and I will take the summons down the valley. I need you to follow us and hit the clearing with your sixth rank spell.â
Senâs eyes widened. âAre you crazy? Ifrit hasnât taught me how to control it properly.
